Sonnet 349: Devotion

Devotion (Sonnet 349)

Difficulties line our path to reach love’s
Fulfillment; but Darling, it’s called treasure
Because there is effort in the venture
Its cost measur’d in bruises mark’d unglov’d.
We brave the pain to have and hold above
Fear which threatens visible wounds that scar
Tattoo monuments say my heart is barr’d
Under your lock and key, plac’d there by love.
Should you ever doubt our love worth this rod
Of discipline, I would cross the ocean.
This barefoot promise, I swear before God;
Count on this beyond all other notions,
E’en come to you cross broken glass UNSHOD;
This, my fullest measure of devotion.
